Should I Spend Money on Google Ads or SEO First?
There's no single right answer for every business, but there is a genuinely useful way to think about the tradeoff — and one honest first step most businesses skip.
Check your own site before spending on either
Both Google Ads and SEO have the same job: getting a visitor to your website. Neither one fixes what happens after the visitor arrives. If your page doesn't have a clickable phone number, a clear call-to-action, or a headline that says what you do and where — paying for more visitors to see that same page usually just means more people who don't convert. It's worth confirming the page itself works before paying to send more traffic to it, either way.
The real tradeoff between the two
Google Ads is faster to start and puts you at the top of results immediately, but the traffic stops the moment you stop paying. It's a direct, measurable cost per click, and it works well when you need leads now and can afford to test and adjust budget.
SEO is slower — often weeks to months before meaningful movement — but the traffic it earns doesn't disappear the day you stop actively working on it, and it tends to compound over time. It requires patience and consistency more than a large upfront budget.
A reasonable way to decide
- If you need leads immediately (a slow week, a new location, a seasonal push), Ads is the more direct lever.
- If you're building for the next year and can be patient, SEO tends to be the better long-term return per dollar.
- If your budget is very limited, fixing on-page gaps (the things a free scan finds — HTTPS, headline, contact visibility, reviews) costs nothing and improves the return of whichever channel you choose next.
- Many businesses end up doing both once the basics are fixed — Ads for immediate demand, SEO for the long run — but that's a "later" decision, not a "first" one.
What we won't tell you
We won't tell you one guarantees more leads than the other, or that either one guarantees any specific result — that depends on your industry, competition, and budget, and nobody can honestly promise otherwise. What's checkable and free is whether your website itself is ready to convert whichever kind of traffic you choose to invest in.
