Why Isn't My Business Showing Up on Google Maps?

This is one of the most common questions a local business owner asks, and there's rarely one single answer. Here are the real, checkable reasons this happens most often — in the order worth checking them.

1. Your Google Business Profile isn't verified or is incomplete

If you haven't verified your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business), or if it's missing basic information — hours, category, service area, phone number — Google has less reason to show it. This is the first thing to check, and it's free to fix directly through Google.

2. You're searching from too far away

Google Maps rankings are heavily distance-based. If you're searching from across town, or from a different city than where your business is located, you may simply be outside the radius Google considers relevant for that search — even though a nearby customer would see you. Try searching from a location close to your business, or ask a customer near you to check.

3. Your business category doesn't match how people search

Google Maps relies heavily on the primary category you've set. A roofer categorized as "general contractor," or a dentist categorized as "medical clinic," can miss searches that use the more specific term. Checking that your primary and secondary categories match what customers actually type is a real, free fix.

4. Your name, address, and phone number aren't consistent elsewhere online

Google cross-checks your business information against other places it appears online — your website, directories, social profiles. If your address is formatted differently in different places, or an old phone number is still listed somewhere, it can quietly weaken how confident Google is in your listing.

5. You have few or no reviews

Review count and recency are real ranking factors for Google Maps, not just trust signals for customers. A profile with zero or very old reviews tends to rank behind a similar business with recent, real reviews — there's no shortcut here except asking real customers.

6. It can take time, even after everything is fixed

It's worth being honest about this: Google Maps ranking changes aren't usually instant. Even after fixing every item above, it can take days to weeks for Google to fully re-crawl and re-rank a listing. If nothing has changed after a day, that doesn't mean the fix didn't work — it may just not have propagated yet.

What to check first

In order: verify your profile is claimed and complete, confirm your category matches how customers search, check your address/phone consistency, then work on reviews. These are the same signals Resultoz's free scan checks on your actual website — not a guess, a real look at what's there.

If you want a plain-language look at what's actually showing (or not showing) about your business online, Resultoz's free visibility review takes about a minute and doesn't require creating an account first.
