How fast should a small business website load? โฑ๏ธ
Short answer: Google says a good page shows its main content within 2.5 seconds, reacts to taps in under 200 milliseconds, and does not jump around. In our phone tests of 587 Los Angeles County small business websites, the middle one took 8.3 seconds.

Google's three numbers, in plain words
Google calls these the Core Web Vitals (Google Search Central: Core Web Vitals). Here is what each one means for a customer on a phone:
- ๐ผ Main content shows up (LCP): 2.5 seconds or less. This is when the big picture or headline appears. Google sets over 4 seconds as poor (web.dev: Largest Contentful Paint; web.dev: how the Core Web Vitals thresholds were set).
- ๐ Page reacts to a tap (INP): under 200 milliseconds. When someone taps "Call" or the menu, something should happen right away.
- ๐ Page does not jump (CLS): under 0.1. Buttons should not move just as someone tries to tap them.
Google's free test at pagespeed.web.dev also gives a score from 0 to 100. Google colors 90 to 100 green (good), 50 to 89 orange (needs improvement), and 0 to 49 red (poor) (Chrome for Developers: how the performance score works). Google also says a perfect 100 is very hard and not expected, so do not chase it.

This is Google's lab test on a simulated mid-range phone on a slower mobile network, one run per site, so real visitors on fast phones may see a quicker page. These are websites we chose to check, not a random sample.
Fast is possible on a small budget. On our list of LA's Easiest-to-Call Plumbers (November 2026), several local plumber websites showed their main content in under 2 seconds.
Does speed change where I show up on Google?
Speed is one part of what Google calls page experience. Google says it always tries to show the most relevant content, even when the page experience is not great, but when many pages are equally helpful, a great page experience can help (Google Search Central: page experience). So a faster site is not a ranking promise. The clearer reason to fix it: people on phones leave slow pages, and they cannot call you from a page they never saw.
Test your own site in 5 minutes โ
- Go to pagespeed.web.dev, type your homepage, and pick Mobile.
- Write down the score and the "Largest Contentful Paint" time.
- If Google shows "real user" data at the top, that is from real visitors. Trust it over the lab number.
- Open your homepage on your own phone, on mobile data, and count the seconds.
- Scroll down the "Diagnose performance issues" list and look for big images first.
- Run the test again after each change. Results move a little from run to run, so test twice.
The usual fixes, easiest first ๐ ๏ธ
- Shrink big photos before you upload them. Resize it to about the size it shows on screen.
- Remove auto-playing video banners at the top, or swap them for a photo.
- Remove add-ons you do not use: old sliders, pop-ups, extra fonts, widgets.
- Load the chat box after the page, not first.
- Turn on caching if your website builder offers it (on WordPress, a caching plugin).

Questions people ask ๐ฌ
What is a good load time for a small business website?
Google says the main content should show within 2.5 seconds, and over 4 seconds is poor. In our phone tests of 587 LA small business websites, the middle one took 8.3 seconds.
What is a good PageSpeed score?
Google colors 90 to 100 as good, 50 to 89 as needs improvement, and 0 to 49 as poor. Google also says a perfect 100 is very hard and not expected. The load time of your main content matters more than the exact score.
Will a faster website rank higher on Google?
There is no promise. Google says page experience can help when many pages are equally helpful, but relevant content comes first. A faster page mainly helps people on phones stay long enough to call you.
