State of LA Small Business Websites: October 2026 ๐ฑ
We opened 1006 Los Angeles County small business websites on a phone, the way a new customer would. Here is what we saw, in plain words, with every number counted.
The short version
- 81% were slow on a phone (Google PageSpeed: main content over 4 seconds, or a score under 50). (478 of 587 websites)
- 41% did not show their phone number on the first phone screen. (385 of 938 websites)
- 28% of the dentists we checked this way had no tap-to-call button on the first phone screen. (27 of 96 dentist websites)
- 5% had no working tap-to-call link anywhere on the phone homepage (counted only when a second check agreed, so the real share may be higher). (39 of 818 websites)
- The middle website took 8.3 seconds to show its main content on a phone (587 websites; Google says 2.5 seconds or less is good).
Checked October 17, 2026 to October 30, 2026. Los Angeles County only. Each website counted once. We do not name any business.
By kind of business
Each box says what share of the websites we checked had the problem, and how many we checked. Under 10 checked = "Too few to say".

How we checked ๐
- ๐ฑ Phone size. Our checker opened each homepage in Google Chrome at phone size (390 pixels wide, like an iPhone), with a phone's touch screen and browser name.
- ๐ First screen only for the first-screen questions: the top 844 pixels, what you see before you scroll.
- ๐ A call button (checked for dentists this month, October 30, 2026 to October 30, 2026) counts when you can see a link on that first screen that starts a phone call (a "tel:" link) with a real 10-digit US number. A number written as plain text does not count as a button.
- ๐ต No working call link at all comes from a second, whole-page check (October 19, 2026 to October 29, 2026). A website only counts as "no working call link" when a second check and a real tap agreed. Pages with no phone number at all, and anything unclear, were left out (many were parked or default pages), so the real share may be higher.
- ๐ข Number on first screen means a phone number you can read as text in the first 844 pixels (a number inside a picture is not counted). Some of these checks used a slightly shorter phone screen; we still counted the same top 844 pixels of the page.
- ๐ข Slow means Google PageSpeed Insights (mobile test) said the main content took more than 4 seconds to show, or gave a performance score under 50 (out of 100).
- ๐ Dates: call button on first screen October 30, 2026 to October 30, 2026; phone number October 19, 2026 to October 30, 2026; speed October 17, 2026 to October 30, 2026.
- ๐งช Speed is Google's lab test (a simulated mid-range phone on a slower mobile network), so real visitors on fast phones may see a quicker page.
- ๐ Los Angeles County only. We kept a website only when its city is in Los Angeles County. Some websites had no saved address; for those we used the LA County city we searched for. Websites with an unknown city or a city outside the county were left out.
- 1๏ธโฃ Counted once. When we checked the same website more than once, we kept the newest check.
- ๐ซ What we did not check: other pages, contact forms, booking tools, Google listings, reviews, prices or the quality of the work.
- โ ๏ธ Limits: these are websites we chose to check while looking for businesses to help (mostly found on OpenStreetMap and web searches), not a random sample of every business in LA. Dentists make up the biggest group. Websites change every day, and speed tests can vary from one run to the next. Treat the numbers as a snapshot, not a rule for every business.
Free steps to fix it yourself ๐ ๏ธ
- Open your own website on your phone. Can you see your phone number without scrolling?
- Tap the number. If no call starts, make it a call link (in most website editors: link it to
tel:plus your number, liketel:8185551234). - Put a big "Call us" button at the top of the page, so it is on the first screen.
- Test your speed for free at pagespeed.web.dev. Big photos are the most common reason for a slow page: make them smaller before you upload them.
- Check again after every change.
