Where to put your phone number on your website ๐Ÿ“ž

Short answer: Put your phone number at the top of every page, as real text, linked so a phone can call it in one tap. In our phone checks of 938 Los Angeles County small business websites, 41% did not show the number on the first phone screen.

Free, takes seconds, no card. Data source: our State of LA Small Business Websites (October 2026) report.

The short rule: top, text, tappable

Then add it in a few more places: the contact page, the footer, and next to your main button ("Call now" next to "Book" or "Get a quote").

How often it is missing ๐Ÿ”ข

For our State of LA Small Business Websites report (October 2026) our checker opened 938 Los Angeles County small business websites at phone size (390 pixels wide) and looked at the first phone screen only, the top 844 pixels you see before you scroll (October 2026). 41% did not show a phone number there as text (385 of 938). It changed a lot by kind of business:

A second, whole-page check found that 5% had no working tap-to-call link anywhere on the phone homepage (39 of 818), counted only when a real tap agreed, so the real share may be higher.

Limits: websites we chose to check, not a random sample of every LA business. A number inside a picture was not counted. Treat the numbers as a snapshot.

Why the top of the page matters on a phone

On a computer, a footer number is one glance away. On a phone, the footer can be many screens down. Most people who want to call will not hunt for it. Google also reads the phone version of your site first (Google Search Central: mobile-first indexing), so the phone view is the one to get right.

Use the same number everywhere

Use the same phone number on your website, your Google Business Profile and your other listings. Google says complete and accurate business info helps it match your business to the right searches (Google Business Profile Help: tips to improve your local ranking). Our free name, address and phone check helps you compare them.

Your 5-minute check โœ…

  1. Open your homepage on your phone. Without scrolling, can you see your number?
  2. Try to select the number with your finger. If you cannot, it may be inside a picture.
  3. Tap it. Does your phone offer to call the right number?
  4. Open two other pages (services, contact). Is the number at the top there too?
  5. Check for pop-ups or chat bubbles covering the number or call button.
  6. Compare the number on your site with your Google Business Profile.
  7. Ask a friend to find your number on their phone, and watch where they look first.

Questions people ask ๐Ÿ’ฌ

Where is the best place for a phone number on a website?

At the top of every page, in the header, as text linked with tel: so it can be tapped. In our October 2026 checks, 41% of 938 LA small business websites did not show the number on the first phone screen.

Is it OK if my phone number is part of my logo or banner picture?

It is better as text. A phone cannot tap a number inside a picture, and search engines and screen readers cannot read it reliably. Put the number as words next to the logo.

Should I also have a contact form?

Yes, if you want, but keep the phone number too. Some people want to call right now, others prefer a form. Put the call button at the top and the form on your contact page.
